Event Overview
The UK bank capital market continues to evolve as banks navigate the implementation of Basel 3.1, a changing regulatory landscape at home and aboard, and heightened geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainties.
With the Bank of England seeking to strike a balance between maintaining financial resilience in the face of rising inflation and supporting economic growth, treasurers are reassessing their strategies for the capital structure in response to prudential requirements, resolution frameworks and a renewed focus on capital efficiency. But as major jurisdictions aim to optimise their banks' capital stacks to better reflect the improved, post-GFC bank capitalisations, competitiveness among regions has also increased.
As capital optimisation has become a strategic priority, banks are exploring innovative ways to improve and deploy capital and manage significant risk transfer transactions. At the same time, another strong period of issuance has demonstrated robust investor appetite for UK bank capital across products, currencies and regions, supported by an increasingly diverse global investor base, with rising participation from Asia and the Middle East.
As the market looks ahead to 2027, what will be the key drivers of issuance, investor demand and capital management? How will UK banks respond to the implementation of Basel 3.1, the evolving domestic and international regulatory agenda and increasing competition for capital within the banking sector? And will the exceptionally strong investor demand from past years continue to support both established issuers and challenger banks as they seek to raise and refinance debt capital?
Join us on December 9 in London for our fourth annual GC Live UK Bank Capital breakfast briefing, where treasury leaders, investors, regulators and market experts will come together to explore the trends shaping the future of UK bank capital and their interactions with the wider FIG capital markets.
