EVENT OVERVIEW
For the first time since 2019, Euromoney Conferences and the ECBC will bring the global covered bond community together on North American soil. Taking place in New York City, the Roadshow will convene Canadian issuers, investors from across North America and their global intermediaries for a day of informative primer sessions and engaging panel sessions. The Roadshow will be held in roundtable format to facilitate genuine, interactive debate and discussion.
Dollar covered bond issuance has been cyclical – normally between $50bn and $100bn outstanding – compared with over $2tn in the Euro market alone. Historically it’s been driven by the basis swap and supply and demand in euros.
Is it a chicken and egg scenario? Dollar issuance doesn’t persist because spreads are high against their peers; agencies or the Canadian provinces. Relative spreads are high because of a lack of liquidity, regulation and a narrow investor base. For liquidity to grow, regulation to normalise and investors to invest, we need more supply.
With supply likely to increase next year, particularly – but not only - from Canada, the North America Covered Bond Roadshow will examine what can be done to improve liquidity and supply and make USD covered bonds a better investment proposition. We will also take a closer look at the asset class to help prospective investors access the market and find value.
